Chennai Super Kings Not in Favour Of Playing A Shortened IPL This Year-Source

Chennai Super Kings has hinted that the franchise would like to play a full-fledged IPL 2020. There have been several rumours regarding the future of the cash-rich league and many predict that this year it could be played in September-October. BCCI lately have also shown interest at playing the T20 league later this year behind closed doors.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly also earlier this month sent a letter to all the state association regarding the IPL. Ganguly asked the associations to stay optimistic about the IPL happening this year. As a result IPL, this year may be a truncated one which will be the first since the 2009 season of the IPL. The 2009 edition of IPL took place in South Africa and the tournament was wrapped within 37 days.

The Super Kings, however, doesn’t support the idea of playing a shortened IPL in 2020. According to a source, CSK although supports any decision the BCCI will take but doesn’t want much tinkering with the format. The franchise also stated as the future is uncertain planning anything at the moment is not possible. All franchises would surely need a lot of clarity about various things before preparing for the IPL.

“It is a good thing that the BCCI is showing interest to conduct the IPL. But it is too early to plan anything. A lot of clarity is needed on various matters before we start preparing. CSK will be okay with whatever decision the BCCI takes but then they wouldn’t much tinkering of the format. They would want a full-fledged IPL”, a source told Times Of India.

The biggest challenge for BCCI this year will be the travel arrangement for all foreign players. The future of the IPL this year is still not crystal clear as the country’s borders remain shut. Another rumour these days have been about IPL being played overseas due to the rapid growth of COVID-19 cases in India.

“If the tournament is held in the country, fans are unlikely to be allowed. So it doesn’t really make a difference then if you are hosting the tournament overseas. The crucial aspect is the travelling arrangements of foreign players. BCCI needs to sort that out first”, the source said.
