Chris Woakes Eyes Ashes Return After Rapid Shoulder Recovery

Following a demanding Test series against India, England have now shifted attention to the upcoming Ashes series in Australia later this year. Fast bowler Chris Woakes has shared promising news about his shoulder injury.

Woakes dislocated his shoulder while fielding during the fifth Test at The Oval in London earlier this month. Speaking about his recovery, he mentioned that the process is ahead of schedule, which improves his chances of being ready for the high-profile contest.

Certainly good news for me. That’s the best way to look at it,” Woakes, who was no longer wearing an arm sling, told Sky Sports during The Hundred. He added, “Obviously, out of the sling and feel like I can move it a lot better now, which is good two weeks down the line. I suppose once you get a little bit more movement into it, it feels a little bit more normal. But still a lot of work to do.”

Focus on Rehabilitation Over Surgery

During the recent India series, Woakes managed just 11 wickets across five Tests and admitted his current attention is fully on rehabilitation. He has decided against immediate surgery, aiming instead to regain full strength naturally in time for the Ashes. “Going to try and (stay) focused on the rehab and get it as strong as possible.”

Ideally, not for surgery for now, but we’ll see how that goes and hopefully we can get it nice and strong again,” he said. This approach reflects both caution and determination, as the bowler is aware that rushing the process could hamper his availability for the prestigious series against Australia. The medical team will continue to monitor his progress, but the early signs have lifted the mood within the England camp.

Memorable Effort Despite Injury

The injury occurred on the first day of the final Test against India at The Oval. Though he was ruled out of bowling duties for the rest of the match, Woakes still came to bat on the intense final morning, his left arm supported in a sling, in an effort to help England chase a narrow win. His grit stood out even though England eventually fell just six runs short of victory.

This fighting spirit, combined with his encouraging recovery, has given England fans reason to be hopeful ahead of their next major challenge. The Ashes, set to begin on November 21, will be another demanding five-Test series against arch-rivals Australia, and Woakes’ availability could prove vital for England’s chances.
