South Africa’s pace attack got a major boost with the arrival of 27-year-old Codi Yusuf, who delivered an impressive performance in his Test debut against Zimbabwe. Bowling with speed and control, Yusuf picked up three crucial wickets while conceding only 42 runs in 14 overs.
He dismissed Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Nick Welch, and Wellington Masakadza to help South Africa bowl Zimbabwe out for 251. Earlier, South Africa had declared their first innings at 418. His aggressive style and ability to swing the ball drew comparisons to legendary fast bowler Dale Steyn, leaving fans amazed at his potential.
Journey to the National Team
Codi Yusuf was born on April 10, 1998, in the town of Knysna, South Africa. Before representing the national side, he had already made a mark in domestic cricket by playing for Gauteng Lions. His consistent performances in first-class cricket earned him a spot in the South African Test squad.
Yusuf played 33 first-class matches, taking an impressive total of 103 wickets. His ability to take multiple wickets in an innings was evident through eight four-wicket hauls and four five-wicket hauls. His economy rate of 3.38 further reflects his control and discipline with the ball. His achievements in domestic cricket clearly showcased his readiness for international challenges.
T20 Experience and Personal Life
In addition to red-ball cricket, Yusuf has also featured in South Africa’s SA20 T20 league. He plays for the Paarl Royals and has participated in five matches, claiming three wickets at a higher economy rate of 10. Though T20 hasn’t been his strongest format yet, his pace still makes him a valuable bowler in the shorter version.
Yusuf’s cricket journey began earlier than his Test debut. In 2018, he played a T20 match for the Mpumalanga team against Kenya, although it was not recognized as an official international game. Off the field, Yusuf married Ashlynn Yusuf in September 2023.
Sharing a heartfelt post on Instagram, he wrote, “To the most beautiful woman in the world, thank you for making our day so very special, definitely the best day of my life, I love and appreciate you more than you will ever understand, here’s to a lifetime of memories. My Beautiful Wife.” With his strong debut and rising reputation, Yusuf looks set to become a key player for South Africa in the coming years.
