Former Aussie skipper Mark Taylor has joined the debate on concussion substitute after Yuzvendra Chahal played the first game in place of Ravindra Jadeja. As per Australian coach Justin Langer, Chahal was not a like for like replacement for Jadeja and hence did not deserve to play the game. Meanwhile, Taylor has asked the rules of the game to be respected before the umpires take strict against the misuse of them.

Talking to Sydney Morning Herald, Taylor spoke about respecting the rules of the game and not abusing the same. He further said concussion rules are there for the safety of the players and hence needs to be respected.

“The concussion rules are there to protect players,” Taylor, a former member of the ICC Cricket Committee, was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald.

Do Not Abuse Rules: Mark Taylor

“If they are abused there’s a chance it will go like the runner’s rule. The reason the runners were outlawed was because it started to be abused. It’s up to the players to make sure they use the concussion sub fairly and responsibly. I’m not suggesting that didn’t happen last night,” he added.

Taylor thus took an indirect dig at Australian coach Justin Langer who was seen to have an animated conversation with David Boon after he allowed Chahal to play for Ravindra Jadeja. Like Taylor, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar also slammed Langer for disrespecting the rules of the game.

Talking to India Today, Sunil Gavaskar said that when match referee David Boon had no objection to the concussion substitute rule, the Australian coach should not have questioned the match referee’s decision.

“The match referee is an Australian, he is a former Australian cricketer David Boon. He was okay with Chahal substituting Jadeja” said Gavaskar.

The second T20I between Australia and India will be played in Sydney on Sunday.
