West Indies icon Sir Garfield Sobers passed away at the age of 89 on Friday, July 17, 2026. The legendary all-rounder died at his Barbados home, just days before his 90th birthday. The news of his passing was confirmed by his son, Daniel Sobers. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed.
Cricket West Indies also confirmed the news in a post on X, expressing its condolences to Sobers’ family and loved ones.

Sir Garfield Sobers made his Test debut against England in Kingston in 1954, while his only ODI appearance came against England at Leeds in 1973. Widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history, he represented the West Indies in 93 Test matches.
Across 160 Test innings, Sobers amassed 8,032 runs at an outstanding average of 57.78, registering 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. His career-best score of 365 against Pakistan in 1958* set a new record for the highest individual Test score, a mark that stood until Brian Lara surpassed it in 1994.
As a bowler, Sobers claimed 235 Test wickets at an average of 34.03 and an economy rate of 2.22. His record included eight four-wicket hauls, six five-wicket hauls, and best figures of 6/73.
Sir Garfield Sobers Made History With Six Sixes in a First-Class Over
Sir Garfield Sobers became the first cricketer to hit six sixes in a single over in First-Class cricket, accomplishing the feat while representing Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan. He made his First-Class debut in the 1952/53 season and went on to feature in 383 matches.
Across his First-Class career, Sobers scored 28,314 runs at an impressive average of 54.87, including 86 centuries and 121 fifties. With the ball, he picked up 1,043 wickets at an average of 27.74, registering 36 five-wicket hauls.
He also played 95 List A matches, scoring 2,721 runs at an average of 38.32, with one century and 18 half-centuries, while claiming 109 wickets at an average of 21.95 and an economy rate of 3.27.
