On this day in 1983, India lifted the world cup for the very first time under the leadership of Kapil Dev. the victory changed the landscape of Indian Cricket and more importantly changed the perception of people towards Indian cricket.
It was June 25, 1983, exactly 37 years ago, at Lord’s when India defeated the formidable West Indies side lead by Sir Clive Lloyd and staggered the two-time world cup champions. India had set a target of 184 for West Indies in 60 overs after getting all out in just 54 overs.
1983 World Cup win changed Indian cricket
Mohinder Amarnath and Kris Srikkanth batted well to steady the innings as the two complimented each other. Srikkanth was the aggressor whereas Amarnath gave him the strike to keep the scoreboard ticking. Srikkanth was the highest scorer for India in the final chipping in with 38 runs.
It looked like over for India at the halfway stage with the Caribbean side having the likes Sir Viv Richards, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall in their ranks. But the Indian bowlers responded well with help from the wicket.
India bowled out West Indies for a paltry 140, beating 43 runs to create history. The credit for this credible bowling performance goes to Mohinder Amarnath, Balwinder Sandhu and Madan Lal who picked up key wickets at various stages of the match.
In this match, we also witnessed the famous catch running backwards catch by Kapil Dev to dismiss Sir Viv Richards early on in this innings. It was off Madan Lal’s bowling Viv Richards tried to play a pull shot over mid-wicket, only to find Kapil Dev running back towards deep mid-wicket to complete a sensational catch. It changed the landscape of Indian cricket forever.
