Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Haryana fast bowler Anshul Kamboj has been called up to the Indian squad ahead of the fourth Test in the ongoing five-match series against England. The crucial penultimate match is set to begin on Wednesday, July 23, at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.
Kamboj’s inclusion follows an injury to left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, who hurt his bowling arm while trying to stop a ball during a net session on Thursday, July 17. The mishap resulted in a hand injury that required stitches. As reported by The Indian Express, a BCCI official stated:
“Arshdeep has a deep cut and has had stitches, he will take at least ten days to get completely fit. The selectors have decided to add Kamboj in the squad.”
Anshul Kamboj featured in two India A matches against the England Lions ahead of the Test series, picking up five wickets and scoring a crucial unbeaten 51 in the second game.
In first-class cricket, he has 79 wickets in 24 matches at an average of 22.88, including a 10-wicket haul (10/49) against Kerala in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy, becoming the third bowler in the tournament’s history to achieve the feat.
Injury Setbacks And Team Uncertainty Trouble India Before Key Clash
Team India heads into the fourth Test in Manchester with their backs against the wall, trailing 1-2 in the five-match series. As the pressure mounts, the team management is faced with multiple selection challenges. One of the key decisions for skipper Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir is whether to play Jasprit Bumrah, who is likely to be available for only one of the final two Tests.
Meanwhile, there is uncertainty surrounding Akash Deep’s fitness. The pacer is reportedly nursing a groin issue and did not bowl during India’s final net session before leaving for Manchester. Adding to the team’s worries, vice-captain Rishabh Pant hurt his left index finger in the third Test. It remains to be seen if he will be fit to keep wickets or will play purely as a batter in the crucial fixture.
