CSK’s Bold Moves For IPL 2025: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja Retained, But No Place For Key Players

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises prepare for the upcoming mega auction, the pressure is mounting to finalize their retention lists. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet confirmed how many players each franchise can retain, leaving the cricket world anxiously waiting for an official decision.

Among the teams, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are particularly eager for clarity, as the retention policy could determine whether their iconic captain, MS Dhoni, returns for another season. According to a report from RevSportz, CSK has already put together a shortlist of five players they plan to retain. This list includes Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, and Dhoni himself.

Notably, players like Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, and Maheesh Theekshana are absent from the draft, indicating CSK’s bold decisions as they prepare for the future. Given Dhoni’s potential final season in 2025, the franchise is taking calculated risks by letting go of some key players.

MS Dhoni’s Future Hinges on BCCI’s Retention Policy

CSK management has also requested the BCCI to reinstate an old rule that allowed franchises to retain retired players under the uncapped category. This rule, which was in effect from 2008 until 2021, enabled players who had retired from international cricket for over five years to be considered as uncapped. If reintroduced, this rule could benefit Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2019, by securing his spot at a lower pay grade.

As the 2024 season saw CSK miss the playoffs, Dhoni is undoubtedly looking for redemption in the 2025 IPL season. However, his participation hinges largely on the retention policy the BCCI is set to announce, making the decision crucial for both the player and the franchise.

The fate of Chennai Super Kings’ retention strategy—and MS Dhoni’s potential swansong—rests heavily on the BCCI’s yet-to-be-announced retention policy. While CSK has made bold moves by drafting a retention shortlist, excluding some key players, the team’s focus is on building a future while also potentially giving Dhoni one final season to end on a high. With the clock ticking toward the IPL 2025 mega auction, both the franchise and its fans eagerly await the BCCI’s final decision, which will significantly shape the team’s path forward.
