CT17 : Top five previous encounters between India and Bangladesh

India will take on Bangladesh in the second semi-finals of Champions Trophy 2017 at Edgbaston Today.

In the past 2 years, Bangladesh have improved a lot in One day international playing 28 matches since 2015 winning 14 matches, losing 11 matches and 3 no results. The current Indian team are looking a confident unit and would love to play their best game during tommrow’s semi-finals.

Here we look at the top five previous encounters between these two teams :- 

  1. 2015 World Cup Quarter finals

India and Bangladesh met in the 2nd quarter finals of the World Cup 2015 held at Australia and New Zealand. This match took place at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on 19th March 2015. During that match, India won the toss and elected to bat first. The openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma added 75 runs for the first wicket before Dhawan was dismissed 30. Virat Kohli, Ajiyanka Rahane could not contribute much to the team’s cause.

Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina put on 122 runs for the fourth wicket. Rohit Sharma completed his century in 108 balls while Raina made his 50 in 46 balls. Sharma was dismissed for 137. Ravindra Jadeja scored a quick fire 23 in 10 balls to help India post 302 for 6 in 50 overs.

Chasing the target of 303, Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes added 33 runs for the first wicket in 6.3 overs before Bangladesh lost 2 quick wickets in succession. All the batsmen got starts but was not able convert into big total. Bangladesh were bowled out for 193 in 45 overs to hand India a massive 109 runs win and qualify for the semi-finals. Umesh Yadav was the pick of bowlers for India taking 4 for 31.

  1. 1st ODI at Dhaka

After the World Cup 2015, Bangladesh took on India in the first match of 3 match ODI series at Dhaka. This match was played on 18th June 2015. In that match Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat. Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar gave the team a flying start putting on 102 runs in 13.4 overs. Both the openers scored half centuries. After that 4 wickets fell in quick succession to leave Bangladesh at 146 for 4. Sabbir Rahman and Shakib- AL- Hasan added 83 runs for the fifth wicket. Good hitting by Nasir Hossain and captain Mortaza helped Bangladesh to post 307 in 49.4 overs.

Chasing the target of 308, the Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma gave a solid start putting on 95 runs for the first wicket. As the wicket of Dhawan wicket fell, Mustafizur Rahman bowled with great variations and took his maiden 5 wicket haul. India was bowled out for 228 in 46 overs giving Bangladesh a 79 runs win.

  1. 2nd ODI at Dhaka

Two days later, Bangladesh took on India in the second One-day international at Dhaka. This match was played on 21st June 2015. This time India won the toss and elected to bat in a 47 overs match. Rohit Sharma was dismissed off the very first ball. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli added 74 runs for the second wicket. Dhawan scored 53 while MS Dhoni made 47 runs. The rest of Indian batting line up failed to bat against Mustafizur Rahaman who took 6 wickets for 43 runs. India was bowled out for 200 in 45 overs.

Chasing the target of 201, every Bangladesh batsmen contributed with 34 from Sarkar, 36 by Liton Das, 31 by Rahim. Shakib- AL-Hasan and Sabbir Rahaman remained not out winning the match by 6 wickets with 54 balls to spare. This was Bangladesh first series win over India.

  1. 3rd ODI at Dhaka

Already lost the series, India took on Bangladesh in the final ODI match at Dhaka. This match was played on 24th June 2015. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field. The Indian batting unit clicked as Shikhar Dhawan scored 75, captain MS Dhoni 69, Ambati Rayadu 44, Suresh Raina 38, Stuart Binny and Axar Patel cameo’s helped India to post 317 for 6 in 50 overs.

Chasing the target of 318, the Bangladesh batsmen got starts but lost wickets at regular intervals. It was a good bowling display by team India who bowled out Bangladesh for 240 in 47 overs. India won the match by 77 runs to salvage pride in the series.

  1. Bangladesh vs. India (2nd ODI) 2014

Bangladesh took on second string side of India in the 2nd ODI match at Dhaka. This match was played on 17th June 2014. India was captained by Suresh Raina. During that match Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field. The conditions helped the pace bowlers and Taskin Ahmed was brilliant taking 5 wickets for 28 runs in 8 overs. For India, the top scorer was Captain Suresh Raina with 27 runs. Men in Blue were dismissed for paltry 105 in 25.3 overs.

Chasing the target of 106, the Indian fast bowlers made use of the conditions. Stuart Binny and Mohit Sharma made the life terrible for Bangladesh batsmen with the bounce. Binny took 6 wickets for just 4 runs in 4.4 overs while Mohit Sharma took 4 for 22 in 8 overs. Bangladesh was bowled out for just 58 in 17.4 overs. India won the match by 47 runs via D/L method.
