India and England played their first World Cup match on 7th June 1975. In the 2019 edition of World Cup, the Indian Cricket team have been on a roll winning 5 matches and 1 tied match. On the other, England is in a tough situation after losing matches to Sri Lanka and Australia.

1. India versus England, 1987 Semi-finals

India faced again England in the 2nd semi-finals of the 1987 World Cup played on 5th November at Wankhede Stadium, Bombay. 

Indian captain Kapil Dev won the toss and decided to field first. A brilliant 115 by Graeme Gooch, Mike Gatting 56 and Allan Lamb 32 helped England post 254 for 6 in 50 overs. For India, Maninder Singh took 3 for 54 while Kapil Dev took 2 for 38.

Chasing the target of 255 runs to win, it was a disappointing batting performance by the Indian team as they were bowled out for 219 in 45.3 overs. Mohammed Azharuddin was top scorer for India with 64. 

 2. India versus England, 1992 Round Robin Format

In the 1992 World Cup, India lost to England in the 2nd match of the tournament played on 22nd February at WACA Ground, Perth. England captain Graeme Gooch won the toss and decided to bat first. 

Despite Robin Smith 91, Graeme Gooch 51, the Indian bowlers restricted England to 236 for 9 in 50 overs. For India, Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath and Manoj Prabhakar took 2 wickets each. 

Chasing the target of 237 runs to win, the Indian batsmen got starts but not able to score big runs. Ravi Shastri and Kris Srikanth added 63 runs for opening wicket. After that India lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 227 in 49.2 overs, to lose the match by 35 runs. 

3. India versus England, 1999 World Cup, Group Stage

India took on England in a Group A match played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 29th-30th May. The match was stopped by Thunderstorms on 29th into the 21st over in England innings. In that match, England captain Alex Stewart won the toss and decided to field first. 

Rahul Dravid was the top scorer for India with 53, Sourav Ganguly 40, Ajay Jadeja 39 helped India post 232 for 8 in 50 overs.

With a target of 233 runs to defend, the Indian bowlers did a brilliant job reducing 73 for 3 in 20.3 overs. Using the reserved day, it was a great effort again to bowl out England for 169 in 45.2 overs. India won the match by 63 runs. Javagal Srinath, Debashish Mohanty, Anil Kumble took 2 wickets each. Sourav Ganguly was the pick of bowlers with 3 for 27. 

4. India versus England, 2003 World Cup, Group Stage

After the 1999 World Cup match, the Indian Cricket team took on England in a Pool A game played on 26th February at Kingsmead, Durban.

In that match, Indian captain Sourav Ganguly won the toss and decided to bat first. Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar got the team off to a great start adding 60 runs for opening wicket. Sachin Tendulkar 50, Rahul Dravid 62, Yuvraj Singh quick fire 42 helped India post 250 for 9 in 50 overs.

Defending the target of 251 runs to win, Ashish Nehra broke the backbone of England batting line up taking 6 for 23 to help India register a famous 82 runs win. India bowled out England for 168 in 45.3 overs. Andrew Flintoff was the top scorer for England with 64. 

5. India versus England, 2011 World Cup, Group Stage

India and England faced off each other in the Group B match played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on 27th February 2011. MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. 

It was a brilliant batting display by the Indian team. Sachin Tendulkar 120, Gambhir 51, Yuvraj Singh quick fire 58, MS Dhoni 31 helped Men in Blue were bowled out for 338 in 49.5 overs.

Chasing down the target of 339 runs to win, Andrew Strauss 158, Ian 69 almost took England home but Zaheer Khan breakthroughs stem the flow of runs. England scored 338 for 8 in 50 overs to tie the match.
