Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori is reportedly set to leave the team camp to join IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ahead of the 2025 IPL Auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Vettori will be unavailable for the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. He has been working with Australia since 2022 and was part of the coaching staff that helped secure the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup in India.
The 45-year-old is also a head coach in various leagues around the world, most notably with Sunrisers Hyderabad, who appointed him in August 2023. His T20 commitments globally have caused him to miss a few Australian tours since his appointment.
Ahead of the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 in Perth, Vettori will fly out to Jeddah to join the Hyderabad-based franchise. An Australian team spokesperson confirmed this via ESPNCricinfo:
“We are very supportive of Dan’s role as Head Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dan will complete the final preparation for the first Test before attending the IPL auction. He will then be with the team for the remainder of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.”
Notably, the former New Zealand spinner and current Australian Test captain, Pat Cummins, both share a dressing room in the IPL, with Cummins having led SRH to the final this year for the first time since 2018.
The 2025 IPL Mega Auction clashes with Days 3 and 4 of the 2024/25 BGT 1st Test
The third and fourth days of the first Test in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, starting on November 22 at Optus Stadium in Perth, will coincide with the IPL Auction, scheduled for November 24 and 25 at the Abady Al Johar Arena in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Key figures from various franchises, such as Justin Langer for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Ricky Ponting for Punjab Kings (PBKS), may face a difficult decision between fulfilling their IPL duties or their broadcasting commitments.
