Sri Lanka Cricket has made a significant leadership change just weeks before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, naming Dasun Shanaka as the captain of the national T20 side and removing Charith Asalanka from the captaincy role. The decision was confirmed on December 19, 2025, when the newly constituted selection committee, led by chief selector Upul Tharanga Wickramasinghe, announced Shanaka would lead the team through the entirety of the T20 World Cup.
This move ends Asalanka’s brief tenure as T20I captain, which included leading Sri Lanka in a recent tri-series in Pakistan. Asalanka had to return home from that tour due to illness, prompting Shanaka to take over as stand-in captain, and now formalizing that change for the major multi-national tournament.
The selectors explained that after discussions with head coach Sanath Jayasuriya and head of high performance Jerome Jayaratne, they were unanimous in their decision to appoint Shanaka as the leader for the upcoming World Cup. Alongside this leadership change, the board chose to stick with the previously announced 25-player preliminary squad, which includes both Shanaka and Asalanka. The announcement signals a clear shift in approach by Sri Lanka Cricket as they finalize preparations for the global event scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in early 2026.
Context Behind the Decision
Charith Asalanka’s earlier appointment as captain had been part of Sri Lanka’s attempts to inject new energy into the T20 side, but his recent return from the Pakistan tri-series—officially for medical reasons—became a pivotal moment. While Sri Lanka Cricket maintained that Asalanka’s departure was due to illness and not disciplinary issues, it nonetheless placed increased responsibility on Shanaka, who stepped in and led the team during that series.
Sri Lanka Cricket had also issued a statement warning that any player leaving the tour against directives could face formal review, though Asalanka’s case was treated as medically justified.
Shanaka’s appointment reflects his experience and prior leadership roles within the team. As an international all-rounder with past captaincy experience, including leading Sri Lanka in bilateral series and winning T20Is, selectors see him as a stabilizing presence for the squad as they head into the World Cup campaign.
Squad Composition and Strategy Moving Forward
The preliminary squad retains a balance of experienced campaigners and promising talent. Alongside Shanaka’s leadership, the squad includes key batsmen such as Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, senior wicket-keepers like Kusal Perera and Niroshan Dickwella, and bowling options featuring Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, and Dushmantha Chameera. The selectors have emphasized that Shanaka will be considered primarily in his role as an all-rounder, and discussions between the captain and coaching staff are expected to define his responsibilities in the lead-up to the tournament.
This leadership change, while notable, comes as Sri Lanka finalizes its preparations for one of the sport’s most important events—aiming for a strong performance on home soil and across the subcontinent when the World Cup begins in February 2026.
