Former Australian cricketer David Warner has expressed confidence in his team’s chances of winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The tournament is set to begin on February 19, with Australia kicking off their campaign against England on Saturday, February 22.
However, the Aussies have been dealt a major blow with injuries to key players, including captain Pat Cummins and pacer Josh Hazlewood. Cummins is still recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Hazlewood has been ruled out due to a hip issue.
Adding to their challenges, Mitchell Marsh is sidelined with a lower-back injury, and Marcus Stoinis announced his retirement just before the tournament. Despite the absence of four key players from their victorious 2023 ODI World Cup squad, Warner remains optimistic, praising Australia’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
“Australia are very good in the World Cups and Champions Trophies and in tournament play. So, the Australian team knows how to win. They know how to succeed. It doesn’t matter what players they play.”
”The guys are all built with playing under pressure. So, I think, whoever replaces those guys would do very well and the team in general would do great as well,” Warner told a virtual press conference as quoted by Reuters.
Australia to Name New Captain for Champions Trophy, Smith and Head in Contention
With Cummins unavailable, the Australian team management must appoint a new captain for the tournament, with Steve Smith and Travis Head emerging as the leading candidates. Australia is placed in Group B alongside England, South Africa, and Afghanistan.
The team has won the Champions Trophy twice, securing back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2009 under Ricky Ponting’s leadership. However, they have not won a single match in the tournament since their 2009 triumph. Eager to break this streak, Australia will be determined to reclaim their dominance in ODI cricket in the upcoming edition.
