Legendary Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag was honored on Tuesday by the DDCA. The Delhi and District cricket association renamed the gate no. 2 of the Ferozshah Kotla cricket stadium to Virender Sehwag gate.
Although this was a moment of great pride for both Viru and DDCA, things took a bitter turn when everyone realized that the authorities responsible for the construction of the gate had committed a grave error.
On the gate that was renamed after Sehwag, a written stat read “only Indian to score a triple hundred in Test cricket”, which was only true until December last year. During the last visit of the English team to India, young Karun Nair smashed an unbeaten 303 in the final test in Chennai and became the second cricketer after Sehwag from India to register a triple ton in test cricket.
This was an embarrassing moment for the DDCA, but the legend himself decided not to blow things up as he didn”t mention this blunder at all. Instead, he was all praise of this move, ” Any youngster will get motivated reading the name. Sehwag played here as a kid and when he left there is a gate named after him so if I can also play for U19, U16, U23 or Ranji for Delhi and then represent India, then a gate, stand or something will be after me,” he said.

Viru was very gracious in his praise of the authorities, “it is an honour to have a gate named after me at the Kotla”. It was indeed a special moment for him to have his name on the gate of the ground where he started his journey.

While this was an appreciable move by DDCA, it was dumped by an unintentional blunder. One hopes that the mistake has been realized and will now be rectified sooner rather later.
