Mumbai Indians Hold Nerve in High-Stakes Clash
Mumbai Indians displayed greater composure under pressure to defeat Gujarat Titans by 20 runs in a high-octane IPL 2025 Eliminator in Mullanpur on Friday. Veteran Rohit Sharma led the charge with a lucky yet commanding 81 off 50 balls, while debutant Jonny Bairstow made an instant impact, smashing 47 off just 22 deliveries. Their efforts powered Mumbai Indians to a daunting total of 228/5. In reply, Gujarat Titans, despite a superb knock from Sai Sudharsan (80 off 49), could only muster 208/6, ending their campaign.
Mumbai’s bowlers held firm in crunch moments. Jasprit Bumrah’s yorker dismissed Washington Sundar before Richard Gleeson, battling a hamstring issue, got rid of Sudharsan. Gleeson bowled three crucial deliveries in the final over before being substituted by Ashwini Kumar, with Suryakumar Yadav taking tactical charge to seal the game. The win propels Mumbai to Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad, where they will face Punjab Kings.
Titans Fall Short Despite Sudharsan’s Elegance
Chasing 229 under heavy dew was always going to be tough, but Sai Sudharsan made it look achievable for a while. The left-hander played with finesse and precision, repeatedly finding gaps to keep his team in contention. His dismissal in the 16th over, attempting an audacious scoop, was a turning point. From there, Mumbai slowly wrestled back control.
“Definitely not easy when we drop 3 catches, wasn’t easy for the bowlers to control and doesn’t help when you drop 3 catches,” said Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill after the game.
Rahul Tewatia and Sherfane Rutherford were left with the unenviable task of scoring 36 off the final two overs. Gleeson’s tight line in the 20th made the target unmanageable, sealing Gujarat’s fate. Captain Shubman Gill admitted post-match that poor fielding, including three dropped catches, significantly hampered their chances.
Rohit and Bairstow Light Up Powerplay
Opting to bat on a less grassy pitch, Mumbai’s openers tore into Gujarat’s bowling. Bairstow, fresh from a good county stint, took on Prasidh Krishna for 26 runs in a single over, showcasing fearless hitting. Rohit, dropped twice early on, made the most of the lifelines, punishing spinners and seamers alike. The duo powered Mumbai to 79/0 after six overs – their best powerplay of the season.
Even Rashid Khan wasn’t spared, as Rohit attacked him with aerial shots. Suryakumar Yadav (33 off 20) and Tilak Varma (25 off 11) kept the momentum going, while Hardik Pandya’s late fireworks lifted the total past 225. For the third match in a row, Titans conceded over 225, underlining their bowling woes in pressure situations.
