Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has said that Delhi Capitals will dominate the IPL in the next four to five years. They finished second on the points table this season and made their first-ever IPL final. They finished third on the table last season.

The combination of Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting has done wonders for the team since they have taken over and Pathan believes that the domination is here to stay for a length of time. After making it to the top four in IPL 2019, Delhi Capitals progressed one more step to reach the final; although they lost in the summit clash to Mumbai Indians.

Delhi Capitals to Dominate Next 4-5 Years in IPL – Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan on the show Cricket Connected on Star Sports said that Delhi have found their core and would like to build on it in the next four to five years. He also compared Delhi Capitals to be like Chennai Super Kings like they used to be earlier.

“I see the Delhi Capitals in the next few years like CSK used to be earlier. They used to dominate and win a lot of matches. But now you will see the Delhi Capitals dominate for the next few years” Pathan said.

He also said that the presence of two South African pacers and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis bolsters their bowling attack as well.

“They have given themselves a very good chance by choosing a very good team and preparing a very good core. They have a very good captain. They have a couple of South African pacemen who bowl very fast” Pathan further added.

The former Indian all-rounder pointed out two areas that Delhi would look to better themselves. Pathan said that Delhi should look for a leg spinner and a finisher to give their side a more complete look.

“They have to work on two things. If they can get a good finisher, whether he is an Indian or overseas. I still feel they have a small problem. They rely a lot on Shimron Hetmyer and Stoinis has also done very well to a certain extent but if one more batsman supports them, then this team will become even stronger. And along with that I feel a good wrist-spinner, who is preferably Indian on whom they can invest” said Pathan.

With the BCCI announcing a full auction ahead of IPL 2021, Delhi Capitals would look for ideal players for these two roles in the side. The BCCI further added that IPL 2021 will have nine teams.
