The left-handed Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell has endorsed the selectors’ decision to leave him out of the side for the tour of Sri Lanka. However, as much as he would like to be back in the Test brigade, 36-year-old Maxwell accepted the sitting of the selectors and looked forward to the future. Maxwell was among the key players to headline the performance in recent matches of the Big Bash League (BBL), helping Melbourne Stars to triumph.
Maxwell has been excellent in the recent BBL, performing well against the Sydney Sixers and managing a magnificent unbeaten 58 to win his team a match over the Renegades, besides scoring a majestic 90 off just 52 balls when his team had to chase 173 against the Renegades in the latest match. But even if he did not make a test trip, his ambition continues to drive him and his recent performance indicates that he has not lost it yet.
“I can completely understand their reasoning”- Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell, a powerful all-rounder who was left out of the squad for the forthcoming two-match Test tour to Sri Lanka, stated that he would have made the same decision as the Australian selectors.
Maxwell, who hasn’t played Test cricket since 2017, was left out of Australia’s 16-man squad for the tour to Sri Lanka because selectors added uncapped all-rounder Cooper Connolly. He claims he fully understands this rationale.
“It’s just selection. There’s always going to be people wanting to be there and I made no secret that I desperately wanted to be on that tour, but I can completely understand their reasoning. The fact that they’re already in the World Test Championship final, they’ve got a couple of Tests in Sri Lanka and there’s going to be some sub-continent tours over the next few years, so they get to look a few new guys in those conditions” Glenn Maxwell said.
“What an experience for those guys to go over there – Cooper Connolly on his first Test tour – I certainly would’ve made the same decision as they have,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.
