Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan acknowledged that MS Dhoni has not yet confirmed his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. However, he remains optimistic that the cricket icon will play in the upcoming T20 league season.
Dhoni led CSK to triumph in IPL 2023 before passing the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad for IPL 2024. Unfortunately, Chennai did not make it to the playoffs, losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their final league match.
Since the tournament’s end, there has been uncertainty regarding Dhoni’s return for another season. A mega auction is set to take place before the 2025 season, with reports indicating that October 31 is the deadline for all 10 franchises to finalize their retention lists.
CSK CEO Viswanathan has stated that the franchise is eager for Dhoni to participate in next year’s IPL, but he also acknowledged that the former India captain has not yet communicated his final decision. India Today cited a report from Sports Vikatan in which Viswanathan shared his thoughts:
“We also want Dhoni to play in the CSK team. But Dhoni has not confirmed it to us yet. Dhoni said, ‘I will tell you before October 31.’ We hope that he will play.”

If he approves, the 43-year-old former CSK captain can be retained by the franchise as an uncapped player for ₹4 crore. Having not played international cricket since 2019, the wicketkeeper-batter meets the criteria of an ‘uncapped Indian player’ under the IPL regulations set for 2025-2027.
“We can anticipate MS Dhoni playing in T10 once he decides”- T10 Global Sports chairman
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Dhoni’s participation in IPL 2025, Shaji Ul Mulk, founder and chairman of T10 Global Sports, believes the Indian legend could also play in T10 leagues in the future.
“Absolutely, I think outside of the top level of international cricketers playing, current India internationals are not allowed to play outside of the Indian Premier League.”
”The recently retired players, almost all the big names of India, have come to play T10. So yes, we can expect MS Dhoni to be playing T10 when he makes up his mind,” Shaji told ANI.

Former Indian cricketers such as Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, and Irfan Pathan have experienced T10 cricket. The next edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 is set to occur from November 21 to December 2.
