Dilshan Madushanka Has Been Sidelined For The Rest Of The Bangladesh Tour Due To A Hamstring Injury

Sri Lankan left-arm fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka will miss the final ODI against Bangladesh and will also be unavailable for selection in the upcoming Test series due to a hamstring injury.  The injury occurred during his seventh over, specifically in the 26th over of the innings, prompting him to leave the field and not return to bowl.

At the time of his injury, Madushanka had figures of 2-30 after bowling 6.4 overs. He had dismissed Litton Das in the opening over and later removed Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto after the first powerplay.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) issued a concise statement verifying the bowler’s injury, which ended his tour prematurely.

“Dilshan Madushanka will not further take part in the ongoing tour as the bowler will return to start rehabilitation work after suffering an injury during the 2nd ODI.”

“Madushanka, who left the field during the second ODI while bowling, has suffered a left hamstring injury, as confirmed by an MRI scan performed on the player,” the statement read.

As a result of the injury, Madushanka was unable to bowl in the latter part of the innings. Bangladesh eventually reached a total of 286-7, with Towhid Hridoy contributing an unbeaten 96.

Sri Lanka faced a shaky start to their run chase, finding themselves at 43-3 at one point. However, they were rescued by a substantial partnership between Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka.

The ongoing three-match ODI series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh stands at 1-1, with the final match set to take place on Monday, March 18 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Madushanka’s injury could affect his debut IPL season with the Mumbai Indians

The full extent of Madushanka’s injury remains unknown, raising concerns about his upcoming participation in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Mumbai Indians (MI).

Madushanka secured a ₹4.6 crore deal with the five-time champions following his impressive performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup. While MI boasts sufficient depth to compensate for Madushanka’s absence, his role as a dependable left-arm pacer alongside Jason Behrendorff adds versatility to the bowling unit.

MI will commence their season with an exciting clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 24.
