Australia captain Pat Cummins expressed immense satisfaction after his side retained the Ashes with two Tests still to play, calling the achievement “hugely satisfying.” Australia wrapped up the series in emphatic fashion, winning the first three Tests convincingly, including an 82-run triumph in Adelaide following dominant victories in Perth and Brisbane. Reflecting on the build-up, Cummins said, “There was so much hype coming into the series, and you never really know how it will play out,” adding that winning the series so decisively exceeded expectations.
He underlined the significance of the result by stating, “So winning in three Tests is hugely satisfying for many reasons.” According to the skipper, pre-series discussions had suggested a closely fought contest, which made the clean sweep even more rewarding. “A lot of the chat before the series was about how evenly poised it was going to be, and to win in straight Tests, it doesn’t get much better than that,” he remarked.
Focus Remains Despite Ashes Success
With the fourth Test scheduled to begin in Melbourne on December 26 and the fifth in Sydney on January 4, Cummins made it clear that Australia would not relax despite already reclaiming the urn. He stressed that the team’s mindset remains unchanged, saying, “The goal was to win the Ashes. But you’re not going into a Test match not wanting to win.”
Emphasising the hunger within the squad, he added, “We’ll go to Melbourne and absolutely be desperate to win that one and Sydney.” While a 5-0 whitewash would be historic, Cummins revealed it has not been a talking point in the dressing room. “And if we get 5-0, it’s amazing, but I can’t say that’s been spoken about at all,” he said, noting that the focus was always on securing the three wins required to clinch the series.
Injury Concerns Cloud Melbourne Test
Despite the celebratory mood, Australia face selection headaches ahead of the Boxing Day Test, with both Cummins and Nathan Lyon doubtful. Cummins, who returned in Adelaide after a long layoff due to lower back issues, admitted he may skip the Melbourne Test to avoid unnecessary risk now that the series is decided. Explaining the situation, he said, “Now that the series has been won, there might be a sense of job’s done, and let’s kind of reassess a risk.”
He further added, “I doubt I’ll be playing Melbourne, and then we’ll have a chat about Sydney.” Lyon’s situation appears more serious after he suffered a hamstring injury while fielding and was later seen on crutches. Cummins acknowledged the concern, stating, “It doesn’t look great,” and admitted that replacing the veteran spinner would be difficult, though he backed the squad depth to step up if required.
