Duleep Trophy To Return To Its Zonal Format Starting Next Season- Reports

India‘s red-ball domestic tournament, the Duleep Trophy, is expected to return to the zonal format next season. This decision was reportedly made during the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday, September 29, in Bengaluru.

The Duleep Trophy 2024 was held from September 5 to September 22 in the form of four teams plays each other – India A, India B, India C, and India D. India A triumphed in the last match defeating India C by 132 runs in match number six in Anantapur.

In an article published by Cricbuzz, it has been reported that there was a near-unanimous opinion among the members of the BCCI AGM that the tournament held recently in Anantapur was of no use. The report also said that while a number of big names participated. Some state associations were unhappy with the four-team format. They claimed that some players who deserved an opportunity were not picked.

Thus, it is expected that the Duleep Trophy will return to the Zonal format next year and could be organized on an Inter-zonal level. As the report stated, although earlier there were only 5 participating teams from 5 zones of the country, the next offering of Duleep Trophy will see the six zonal teams – East, South, West, North, Central and North-East competing.

Ricky Bhui became the top scorer in the 2024 Duleep Trophy tournament. In six innings he managed to make 359 runs with an average of 71.80. Abhimanyu Easwaran was next as he managed to make 309 runs in five innings with an average of 77.25. The other of the top five leading list of run scorers are Shashwat Rawat (256), Ruturaj Gaikwad (232) and Sai Sudharsan (211) respectively.

Now turning towards the bowlers, it was Anshul Kamboj, who was the highest wicket-taker during the 2024 Duleep Trophy. He managed to bag 16 wickets in three games with an astounding average of 17.12.

Mukesh Kumar took 15 at an average of 28.60, while Navdeep Saini took 14 at 25.43. Left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh took 13 wickets, and Tanush Kotian, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Manav Suthar had 10 wickets each.

In addition to the ruling on the Duleep Trophy, the BCCI also appointed Arun Singh Dhumal and Avishek Dalmiya as the two members chosen to the IPL Governing Council during the AGM. In addition, the members agreed that the legal status of the BCCI shall remain as ‘society’.
