ED Summons Mohammad Azharuddin In Corruption Case

Former Indian cricketer and Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case related to the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The allegations stem from his tenure as HCA president, where he is accused of misappropriating INR 20 crore that was allocated for upgrading the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

The funds were intended for improvements such as diesel generators, firefighting systems, and canopies. Azharuddin is expected to appear before the ED on Thursday, October 3, to answer questions about the proper use of these funds.

Misappropriation Allegations

The crux of the investigation revolves around whether Azharuddin, during his presidency at HCA, properly allocated the funds for the stadium’s enhancements. The ED is looking into possible discrepancies in how the money was spent.

Azharuddin, who is also a Congress leader, has strongly denied these allegations, labeling them as politically motivated. In an interview, he stated, “This is just a stunt pulled by my rivals to ruin my reputation.” The 61-year-old maintains that the accusations are baseless and aimed at damaging his public image.

Hyderabad Cricket Developments

Despite the controversy surrounding Azharuddin, Hyderabad cricket is witnessing positive developments. The state government is in talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to build a new international cricket stadium on the outskirts of the city.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced in the state assembly that INR 321 crore has been earmarked for sports from the 2024-25 state budget. This new stadium could potentially become the home ground for Sunrisers Hyderabad, who currently play at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. Sunrisers, former IPL champions, had a strong season in 2024 but lost the final to Kolkata Knight Riders.
