Former Australian skipper Ian Chappell has questioned Joe Root’s tactics that he applied on the fifth day of the Lord’s Test. India ultimately won the game by 151 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the series. This was mostly due to Root’s tactical inability as captain during the crunch times of the game. Chappell said that Root’s captaincy is under the scanner after losing the first Test.
Joe Root’s tactics were heavily criticised after the Indian tailenders scored 89 runs since the dismissal of Pant and Ishant Sharma. That partnership put India in a position of strength and put England on the backfoot.
“He just loses the plot”. His main problem is he doesn’t have a feel for the situation. England have got themselves in a corner, because somebody should have realised a while ago that Joe isn’t the right guy, especially against the better teams.
England Have Little Chance of Winning Ashes: Ian Chappell
Ian Chappell further said that England are in a fix with their skipper as Joe Root ahead of an Ashes series. The former Australian skipper went onto add that with Root as the skipper England have very little chance of winning.
“What are you going to do? Change captain on the eve of an Ashes series? That’s not a good idea. But by picking him as captain, you’re giving yourself very little chance of winning.”
The former Australian skipper further said that with Ben Stokes absent England have no other option but to stick with Root for the upcoming Ashes series.
“They’ve got serious problems now, because they’ve let the situation deteriorate, to the point where they have to make changes at a time when you don’t want to be making changes. At this point, they really want to be settled against India leading into the Ashes. But they’re anything but settled.” he said.
