As Team India continue to receive injury blows ahead of the Test series, the selectors are likely to send opener Prithvi Shaw, middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav and off-spinner Jayant Yadav to England.
After Shubman Gill was ruled out of the entire tour with an aggravated knee injury, pacer Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar suffered injuries while playing for Select County XI against India in the three-day warm-up game. Gill has already returned home and it is learned that Sundar and Khan will also fly back over the weekend.
With a couple of days still left for the Test series to begin, the Indian team management had asked for two openers and one off-spinner as replacements for the three injured players. As per reports, the management wanted Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jayant Yadav, who is also handy with the bat.
Suryakumar Yadav likely to join Team India in England
Shaw and Suryakumar are currently in Sri Lanka where they are playing a limited over series, whereas Jayant Yadav is in India. Incidentally, the management had earlier requested BCCI to send Prithvi Shaw after Shubman Gill’s injury which was turned down considering the squad already has so many openers in the team. But with the injury list increasing, BCCI has changed its mind.
While Prithvi Shaw is likely to travel as Shubman Gill’s replacement, Jayant Yadav will tour as a like-for-like replacement of Washington Sundar. Suryakumar Yadav is being picked because Ajinkya Rahane is dealing with a hamstring issue.
for not asking for a like-for-like replacement for injured medium-pacer Avesh Khan is because the team felt they had enough fast bowlers in the touring party. Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Mohammad Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Umesh Yadav form the pace unit.
