ENG vs IND 2021: Sunil Gavaskar Names Player Who Should Take DRS Calls For India

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar was livid at Virat Kohli for wasting two reviews early on day 2. India used up two reviews inside the first 23 overs and then did not use any more reviews for the next 90 overs on day 3 of the Lord’s Test. Mohammed Siraj yet again pleaded Kohli to use the final review more than once but Kohli was mindful of not wasting the only review left. By the end of day 3, England had taken a 27-run lead with Joe Root unbeaten on 180.

Since Virat Kohli has not been using the DRS reviews properly, Sunil Gavaskar has named the Indian player who should make the calls instead of the Indian skipper.

“I believe only the wicketkeeper should decide whether it’s worth going for a DRS, because every bowler thinks the batsman is out. Similarly, a batsman when given out LBW thinks he might be not out. The first one was a bit close, but on the second appeal, Rishabh Pant was constantly saying ‘don’t take it, don’t take it,’ but at the last second, Kohli reviewed” Sunil Gavaskar said during his commentary stint with Sony Sports.

The former Indian skipper also explained the reason behind Kohli using the review on the LBW appeal against Joe Root early on in his innings. “Virat Kohli probably thought that if India can get Joe Root early, we can get the rest of the batsmen out quickly.”

As it turned out it did not happen and Root went to carry his bat throughout the day finishing unbeaten on 180. With key contributions from partners at the other end, England surpassed the Indian score and added 27 more before getting bowled out for 391.

Mohammed Siraj picked four wickets, Ishant Sharma three and Shami two. Jasprit Bumrah had a wicketless day 3 at Lord’s.
