India’s wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant broke several records during his counter-attacking century against England in the fifth Test match on Friday, July 1 at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. He took on the English bowling attack slamming them for 146 runs off 111 deliveries at a strike rate of 131.53. His knock took the Indian team to a commanding position at the end of the first day’s play.

Rishabh Pant’s blazing innings included twenty boundaries and four sixes. In the process, he broke legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the youngest to hit 100 sixes in International cricket. The left-handed batter at the age of 24, reached the three-figure mark in terms of sixes in international cricket, while Sachin Tendulkar achieved the feat at the age of 25.

The wicket-keeper batter has slammed 48 sixes in 31 Test matches, 24 sixes in as many ODIs, and 31 sixes in 48 T20I matches for India. He hit Jack Leach for a maximum in the 37th over on Friday, to get to 100 sixes. It was also Rishabh Pant’s first six of the match. He went on to hit three more in the innings.

Rishabh Pant also toppled former India skipper MS Dhoni’s record in the match. He slammed the fastest ton by an Indian wicket-keeper batter. Dhoni had achieved this feat in 2005, slamming a century in 93 balls, while Rishabh Pant took just 87 deliveries to complete his. This was Rishabh Pant’s second century against England in English conditions and his fifth overall in Test cricket.

Rishabh Pant’s counter-attacking knock left the fans and the experts wonderstruck. Head coach, Rahul Dravid, who is usually calm, looked animated in the Indian dressing room. He celebrated Rishabh Pant’s century with a loud cheer for the wicket-keeper batter.
