The fourth Test between England and India at Manchester took a bad turn as Rishabh Pant had to leave the field after being hit severely on his right foot. The accident happened towards the end of the last session on Wednesday, 23 July, when Chris Woakes overpitched a yorker that slipped behind the attempted no-look sweep of Pant and hit him dead on the foot. Pant could be spotted distressed at the moment he was hit, and the physios came in to check out the injury.
There were swelling and Area injuries, whereby a small cut was visible, which is worrying because of the kind of damage incurred. Pant was removed via cabby ambulance after a brief evaluation on the field to be treated. The injury was supposed to be properly checked by the Indian team management to ascertain whether he could play the rest of the game.

This incident marks an unfortunate trend for Pant, who had also picked up an injury during the first day of the previous Test at Lord’s. During the process of wicket-keeping, he had an injury in his finger, which disqualified him from proceeding behind the wickets. With such a disappointment, he still went out to the field to bat later in the match and contributed well in the effort to push the match to be played on the last day.
This time round, India will be wishing the same but not everything is rosy. The injury of Pant adds to an already increasing list of injury absences within the Indian team. Both Nitish Reddy and Akash Deep, who played in the last Test, are already unfit because of injury. The possible unavailability of Pant further restricts the choices of India, more so in a match where the depth of batting is vital.
The Indian team will have to gather and review their playing strategy without Pant, in case he is indeed out. His lack of presence may affect the performance of other members greatly and India will be wishing that he heals fast in order to contribute to the success of the team.
