Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his sensational form in Test cricket by hammering his sixth Test century on Day 3 of the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval. At just 23 years of age, the young Indian opener has now notched up four centuries against England, underlining his dominance over the English bowling attack.
His century came off just 125 balls, featuring 11 boundaries and two sixes. He looked in complete control throughout the innings, particularly excelling with strokes played behind square on the off-side—a region where he accumulated 82 of his runs before reaching his hundred. This specific stat set a unique record for the most runs scored behind square at the time of reaching a Test century.
India Breaks Century Record in a Test Series
Jaiswal’s milestone wasn’t just a personal triumph—it also marked a historic moment for Indian cricket. His ton became the 12th century scored by an Indian batter in this Test series, making it the most centuries ever scored by India in a single Test series.
The previous record was 11, set during the 1978 home series against the West Indies. In a broader context, this achievement placed the current series among the most prolific in Test history, ranking third overall in terms of total centuries scored across both teams. Only the 1955 series between Australia and the West Indies, which featured 21 centuries, and another high-scoring series between Sri Lanka and India, rank above it.
A Heartfelt Celebration and Dressing Room Cheers
After reaching his hundred, Jaiswal celebrated in a manner that reflected both passion and gratitude. He removed his helmet and gloves, acknowledged the crowd and his teammates, and blew kisses toward the dressing room.
He also formed a heart shape with his hands, a gesture that brought smiles across the Indian camp, including a visibly pleased Gautam Gambhir, who is part of the team’s coaching staff. The standing ovation from his teammates and the appreciation from the audience were fitting tributes to a player who is quickly establishing himself as a cornerstone of India’s Test batting lineup.
