England have named their playing XI for the first Test against India, set to begin in Leeds on Friday. Ollie Pope retains his No. 3 position, keeping young talent Jacob Bethell out. Jamie Smith will continue as the wicketkeeper after a breakthrough season.
“Warwickshire all-rounder Chris Woakes returns to the side for the first time since December.”
“Durham seamer Brydon Carse will play his first Test on home soil, having featured in his previous five Tests in Pakistan and New Zealand,” England Cricket said in a statement. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett remain the first-choice openers after excellent performances in the recent four-day Test against Zimbabwe, where they put on a double-century stand and scored individual hundreds.
In-form Batters and a Solid Middle Order
Ben Duckett has been particularly impressive, with consistent form in both red-ball and white-ball cricket, especially during the West Indies series. Zak Crawley, though inconsistent at times, is known to score big once set and will aim to perform well against India’s top-class bowling attack. England’s middle order includes experienced players like Ollie Pope, Joe Root, and skipper Ben Stokes, along with rising star Harry Brook.
Root, who recently delivered a match-winning knock in the ODI series against West Indies, will be a key player to watch. Brook, having already made a mark in Test cricket, will want to strengthen his record further on home soil.
Ben Stokes returns at full fitness, offering both batting and bowling strength to the team. Jamie Smith, who did well as Duckett’s partner in white-ball games, is set to keep wickets and bat at No. 7. His inclusion, along with Woakes at No. 8, means England have significant depth in their batting line-up.
Bowling Unit Adjusted Due to Injuries
With Jofra Archer and Mark Wood unavailable due to injuries, England have leaned on a pace-heavy attack. Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse will open the bowling, with Carse getting his first chance to play a Test in England. Josh Tongue, who had a strong showing in earlier matches, will handle the middle overs with pace.
Shoaib Bashir is named as the lead spinner, expected to handle spin responsibilities throughout the match. With Stokes likely to contribute as the fifth bowler, England’s attack appears well-rounded. The team seems to have struck the right balance as they gear up for a crucial series against India.
England XI: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Jamie Smith, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir
