England May Drop Moeen Ali And Jonny Bairstow, With Jacob Bethell Likely To Receive His First Call-Up- Reports

England is ready to take some important decisions regarding their upcoming white-ball series against Australia at home. Old players like Moeen Ali recorded a ton in the T20 Blast recently but had a dull season as the captain of Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred 2024 which does not help his situation.

On the contrary, Bairstow has been struggling for runs for some time now and his transition to the middle order in the national T20 setup is also not fruitful. According to The Telegraph report, one of the new faces expected to feature in the new-age squad is explosive left-handed all-rounder Jacob Bethell.

He started off with an impressive T20 record boasting 731 runs from 44 matches at a strike rate of 138.18. In addition, he contributed significantly to Birmingham Phoenix’s journey into the knockouts of The Hundred 2024 by providing vital knockdowns lower down the order.

Besides Ali and Bairstow, all-rounder Liam Livingstone’s chances for the ODI’s seem dim after recent poor performances. He hasn’t been able to assert himself on 50 overs averaging 29.36 over 29 match appearances which include three single-digit scores in recent eight matches played.

England are considering whether to include Joe Root in the One Day International (ODI) series, since they are caught between preparing for the 2025 Champions Trophy and focusing on a season heavy with test matches. This year, England are scheduled to play another eight Tests, six of which will be played away in Pakistan and New Zealand.

The last time that the ace right-handed batter appeared in an ODI match was during the 2023 ODI World Cup. After its conclusion in subcontinent, England only played three ODIs since then, and they have not played any 50-over match yet in 2024.

Jofra Archer, who recently returned to international cricket before T20 World Cup 2024 build up period, is fit for the white ball series against Australia. Earlier this month he participated in The Hundred 2024 campaign with Southern Brave team but he is yet to switch back to red ball games.

England’s white-ball series against Australia is scheduled to start on September 11

The T20I series against Australia, which begins a day after the conclusion of the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka, is unlikely to feature the red-ball stars of England. After the three T20Is, a five-match ODI series will take place between the two rivals.

Marcus Trescothick’s tenure as acting coach of this assignment could eventually lead to him becoming the permanent coach depending on how well the team performs during that time. In addition, Jos Buttler who was absent for the whole Hundred with calf injury will also be back as captain for this side.
