Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik praised Dhruv Jurel for his brilliant catch that led to Ollie Pope’s dismissal on Day 1 of the third Test against England at Lord’s on July 10. Commentating on-air, Karthik praised Jurel’s technique and compared it to Pant, who left the field with a finger injury, leading to Jurel taking over behind the stumps.
His comments followed shortly after Ravindra Jadeja removed Pope with the first delivery after the tea interval. Jadeja bowled a delivery outside off stump that spun away, and Pope, playing with firm hands, edged it. Jurel showed sharp reflexes to grab a tough catch, dismissing Pope for 44 and breaking a 109-run stand with Root.
Dinesh Karthik shared his thoughts with Sky Sports (via X):
“Dhruv Jurel has picked up a very nice catch coming in as a sub for Rishabh Pant. I am just trying to understand and dissect his technique a little bit, which is little different to Rishabh Pant. And if you have a look at the video, it’s on the split screen at both Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel.”
“Have a look at Rishabh Pant’s glove position, facing the bowler where Dhruv Jurel, a lot more lower and coming out, and how do you check the height of the glove in relation with the keeping pad. Dhruv Jurel is a lot more lower, closer to the keeping pads and the height of it compared to Rishabh Pant.”
Karthik further continued:
“As you watch closely, the key is balance. Dhruv Jurel’s right leg position helps keep his head aligned with the gloves, allowing him to collect the ball cleanly. Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, often rises and moves away from the ball, while Jurel stays in line with it, catching it right in the middle of his hands.”
”Pant’s end position shows a heavy shift to his left leg, unlike Jurel’s balanced stance, which made a tough catch look easy.”
