Ex-SRH Coach Shares Bold Opinion On Umran Malik’s Form Ahead Of IPL 2025

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling coach Dale Steyn recently shared his views on Umran Malik’s decline. Steyn, who played a key role in Malik’s rise during his tenure with SRH in IPL 2022 and 2023, reflected on the pacer’s struggles.

Umran Malik Journey in IPL

Malik shone for SRH in IPL 2022, taking 22 wickets in 14 games and showcasing his raw pace, hitting 156.9 kph. His performances earned him an India debut the same year, where he claimed 24 wickets in 18 matches. However, he was dropped in 2023 due to a high economy rate.

Malik struggled in IPL 2023 and 2024, leading to SRH not retaining him for 2025. He played six domestic matches in 2024, taking four wickets due to a hip injury. Steyn noted his decline, emphasizing control over mere pace.

“Just like a Ferrari has six gears, you don’t have to use all six gears. The Ferrari still can operate in first, second and third and fast bowlers are much the same. They got to be able to know when to use their gears.”

Dale Steyn also mentioned that Malik became too focused on his reputation as a speedster and prioritized bowling as fast as possible, which ultimately did not work in his favor.

“Sometimes players get caught up in the atmosphere, with thousands cheering, and feel the need to bowl at 160 kph. While exciting, it can backfire if it disrupts the game plan, leading to expensive spells that hurt both the team and the player.”

“A couple of games later, you might find yourself out of the team and a season later, you might not find yourself within any franchises. So, you really have to harness that speed and make sure you are using it well.”

Umran Malik aims for a return to international cricket

After being acquired by KKR in November 2024, Umran Malik expressed confidence in making an impact for the franchise in IPL 2025. He believed the opportunity would help him showcase his skills and work towards a return to the Indian team.

“I am really happy to join KKR this season. I am so, so excited to don the KKR jersey. I just can’t wait. They are the defending champions, and I am sure they will win another title this season. I am grateful and thankful to them for giving me this chance,” Umran told TimesofIndia.com.

“I am confident about getting plenty of opportunities this time with KKR. I am 200 percent fit and raring to go. You will see a different Umran Malik this time. I want to perform well in the IPL and make a comeback to the Indian side. The IPL has been a massive platform for most cricketers, including me,” he added.
