Vinod Kambli, a former Indian cricketer, has faced numerous personal and financial challenges. He openly admits that his primary source of income is the ₹30,000 monthly pension from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), for which he expresses deep gratitude. Kambli, once a celebrated figure in Indian cricket, has struggled with addiction, undergoing rehabilitation 14 times.
Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic and eager to contribute to cricket. In a recent interview, Kambli emphasized his dependence on the BCCI pension to support his family and reiterated his willingness to take on cricket-related assignments to stay financially afloat.
Declining Sachin Tendulkar’s Job Offer
Sachin Tendulkar, Kambli’s longtime friend and former teammate, extended a job opportunity at the Tendulkar Middlesex Global Academy (TMGA) to help Kambli during his financial struggles. However, Kambli declined the offer, citing health concerns related to the long commute from Nerul, where the academy was based.
He stated that the physical strain from the assignment would have negatively impacted his well-being. Despite turning down Tendulkar’s offer, Kambli remains deeply appreciative of their enduring friendship and the support extended to him during tough times.
Kambli’s Commitment to Mumbai Cricket
Kambli has expressed a strong desire to work with young cricketers and contribute to Mumbai cricket, a game that has given him so much. He revealed that he approached the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for support, offering his expertise and services at venues like Wankhede or the Bandra Kurla Complex. While he joined the MCA’s Cricket Improvement Committee, the role was honorary and did not provide financial relief.
Kambli remains hopeful for a more active coaching role, emphasizing his passion for mentoring young talent and helping them build a strong, unified team. Despite the hardships, Kambli’s unwavering commitment to cricket and his gratitude for the opportunities it has provided reflect his enduring love for the sport.
