Pakistan’s experienced opener Fakhar Zaman has been officially penalised by the International Cricket Council after his involvement in an on-field confrontation during the T20I Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka on November 29.

The ICC confirmed that Fakhar was guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with minor offences related to professionalism and respect toward match officials. As a result, the left-hander has been fined 10 percent of his match fee and assigned one demerit point to his disciplinary record.

Level 1 penalties, while considered on the lower end of ICC sanctions, are still applied to preserve the spirit of the game and uphold umpire authority. Even though such infractions are common in high-pressure international cricket, the ICC views any form of excessive dissent or aggressive confrontation as unacceptable behaviour for professional players.

Flashpoint in the 19th Over Sparks Controversy

The issue arose during the 19th over of Pakistan’s innings, when Fakhar was dismissed and subsequently reacted strongly to the umpiring decision. Visibly upset, he entered into what the ICC described as a prolonged argument with the on-field umpires, questioning the call that ended his stay at the crease.

The exchange continued longer than permitted, attracting attention from match officials and triggering a review of his conduct after the game.

Such incidents are typically assessed under rules that discourage players from showing dissent toward umpires. The ICC maintains that on-field decisions must be respected, even if players feel wrongly judged, and disagreements should be handled through formal channels rather than heated verbal exchanges.

Admission Helps Avoid Further Proceedings

Fakhar did not dispute the charges, instead admitting the offence at the earliest opportunity, which allowed the matter to be handled swiftly. Because of his acceptance, the ICC did not require a formal hearing, and the sanction was implemented directly by Reon King, member of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees.

According to the ICC’s misconduct guidelines, a Level 1 breach may result in a reprimand, up to 50% match-fee fine, and one or two demerit points depending on the seriousness of the case. In this instance, the ICC considered the penalty sufficient to address the situation without escalating disciplinary action.
