Virat Kohli was bowled for just one run in the second innings of Sunday’s Mumbai Test match against New Zealand, demonstrating his ongoing troubles. The top hitter failed to score more than 100 runs in the three-match series, and this poor performance was the final straw.

Kohli’s problems at the Wankhede Stadium continued after he was run out in the first inning on the opening day. The strain on India’s pursuit increased after he was dismissed early in the second inning. Ravindra Jadeja completed a 10-wicket haul in the match, fulfilling the hosts’ goal to end New Zealand’s innings at the start of the day.

India had an uphill battle when Kohli was dismissed, needing 147 runs to win. Their failure to get off to the best start left the middle order with a difficult task to ensure victory. An uncommon occurrence for the batting legend, Kohli’s poor series raises questions about his form in front of upcoming cricketing responsibilities.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma disappoint again in the Mumbai Test:

The third Test match against New Zealand in Mumbai saw lackluster performances from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, capping up a miserable home season. The series saw the old mainstays struggle, each scoring fewer than 100 runs. Sharma scored 91 runs (avg. 15.17) in 6 innings, while Kohli scored 93 runs (avg. 15.50) in 6 innings.

With Sharma’s most recent Test century in March 2024 and Kohli’s in July 2023, their recent performance has been worrisome. India’s incapacity to score high scores was made clear, as were their batting weaknesses.

The performances of Kohli and Sharma will be closely monitored as India gets ready for the difficult Australia series. Both Kohli (35) and Sharma (36) need to find their form again in order to extend their Test careers, as they are nearing the end of their careers.

India’s seasoned batsmen are crucial to their success in Test cricket. Their destiny will be decided in large part during the next few months. Can India succeed abroad under the leadership of Kohli and Sharma? Time will tell.
