Fans Go Wild as UP Warriorz Triumph in Super Over Against RCB

The 2025 edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) witnessed a historic moment when UP Warriorz Women clinched victory against Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women in the first-ever Super Over in the league’s history. The thrilling contest at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium kept fans on the edge of their seats as the match ended in a tie before Warriorz emerged victorious in the tiebreaker.

Match Summary

Batting first, RCB-W set an imposing total of 180/6, thanks to a brilliant knock by Ellyse Perry. UP Warriorz had a shaky chase, but Sophie Ecclestone’s last-minute heroics ensured a dramatic tie, pushing the game into the first-ever Super Over in WPL history.

RCB-W’s Dominant Batting Performance

Ellyse Perry was the star performer for RCB-W, smashing an unbeaten 90 off 56 balls. Despite Smriti Mandhana falling cheaply, Perry and Danni Wyatt-Hodge steadied the innings with a crucial 94-run stand. However, late wickets prevented RCB from crossing the 200-mark.

Deepti Sharma (2/42) and Tahlia McGrath (1/30) provided key breakthroughs, while Chinelle Henry (1/34) and Sophie Ecclestone (0/29) ensured RCB didn’t completely run away with the game.

UP Warriorz’ Chase Begins

RCB’s bowlers struck early, with Renuka Singh (2/36) dismissing Kiran Navgire and Vrinda Dinesh cheaply. Tahlia McGrath’s early dismissal (0 off 1) further dented UPW’s chances. Despite Deepti Sharma’s fightback, the Warriorz struggled at 72/4.

With wickets falling, Ecclestone (33 off 19) took charge, finding crucial boundaries alongside Saima Thakor (14 off 8). Their counterattack brought UPW back into the game, taking it to the last ball. With 9 runs needed off the last over, Ecclestone tried to seal the win but was run out on the final ball, leading to a thrilling tie.

Super Over: A Historic Moment

Chinelle Henry and Grace Harris opened but struggled to find big shots. Harris played a cautious game, and UPW managed only 8 runs in their Super Over.

Needing 9 to win, RCB-W sent out Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh. However, Sophie Ecclestone delivered a masterclass in spin bowling, conceding just 6 runs and securing a historic victory for UP Warriorz.

Fan Reactions and Social Media Frenzy

Fans showered praise on Sophie Ecclestone for her all-round brilliance and Deepti Sharma for her captaincy. Meanwhile, RCB faced criticism for crumbling under pressure despite being in a winning position.
