Fans React As R Ashwin Claims A Six-Wicket Haul Over Bangladesh In Chennai

R Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin’s brilliant six-wicket haul for 88 runs was instrumental in India’s 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test, securing a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Set an imposing target of 515 for victory, Bangladesh crumbled to 234 all out, with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto providing the only significant resistance. Ashwin, who also played a key role with the bat earlier, was the pick of India’s bowlers, while Ravindra Jadeja provided excellent support, helping India seal the win within four days.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, was full of praise for his bowlers, especially for how they exploited the red-soil pitch, which offered assistance to both seamers and spinners. He highlighted the versatility of the Indian bowling attack, emphasizing that the team has developed a balanced bowling unit over the years.

No matter where we play—whether at home or abroad—we have the ability to adapt with both seam and spin options, which has been a vital part of our success,” Rohit remarked.

Here are some Twitter Reactions:

Bangladesh began the day at 158-4, with Shanto and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan offering some initial resistance, frustrating the Indian bowlers for the first hour. However, Ashwin was brought into the attack and wasted no time, breaking the partnership by dismissing Shakib for 25. The off-spinner drew Shakib forward, forcing a bat-pad catch at short leg, neatly taken by Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Jadeja soon followed up by dismissing Litton Das in the slips, and Shanto’s reckless swipe against the left-arm spinner led to his downfall, effectively ending any hopes Bangladesh had of staging a comeback. Once Shanto departed, the rest of the Bangladesh lineup collapsed, losing their last few wickets in quick succession and surrendering the match with five sessions still remaining.

Ashwin, who had also scored a crucial century in India’s first innings, was named player of the match for his all-round performance. Shanto, reflecting on the loss, acknowledged the difficulty of the task they had faced but insisted their focus had been on extending the match rather than aiming for an improbable victory. “We were just trying to bat as long as we could, not thinking too much about the result,” Shanto said.

Although disappointed, Shanto was encouraged by the performance of his team’s bowlers and urged the batsmen to step up in the second and final test in Kanpur, expressing hope that they would contribute more in the next game.
