Father of Former Indian Cricketer Sentenced to 7 Years in Embezzlement Case

The cricketing world is often filled with stories of triumph and glory, but sometimes, personal tales involving players and their families can take a somber turn. Vinay Ojha, the father of former Indian cricketer Naman Ojha, recently made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Convicted in an 11-year-old bank embezzlement case, he has been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment.

The Case of Embezzlement at Bank of Maharashtra

Eleven years ago, a shocking case of financial misconduct unfolded at the Bank of Maharashtra branch in Betul, Madhya Pradesh. A group of six individuals, led by mastermind Abhishek Ratnam, embezzled ₹1.25 crore by exploiting systemic loopholes and using fraudulent methods.

Vinay Ojha, then the branch manager, played a significant role in facilitating the embezzlement. By allowing fake accounts to be opened and granting access to the bank’s digital systems, Vinay enabled the fraudulent activities that led to the misappropriation of funds.

Judgment and Punishment

On Tuesday, the Multai Additional Sessions Court delivered its judgment. Vinay Ojha received seven years of imprisonment and a fine of ₹7 lakh for his involvement. His sentencing has become a notable example of the consequences of breaching fiduciary duties.

Abhishek Ratnam was identified as the primary orchestrator of the fraud. Sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and fined ₹10 lakh, he used agents and bank officials’ credentials to execute the fraudulent transactions.

“Abhishek Ratnam and Vinay Ojha, through agents, opened fake accounts and embezzled ₹1.25 crore,” advocate Vishal Kodale was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Two brokers, Dhanraj Pawar and Lakhan Hingwe, were sentenced to seven years of imprisonment and fined ₹7 lakh each. Meanwhile, cashier Dinanath Rathore passed away during the investigation, and trainee manager Nilesh Chatrole was acquitted.

“During the investigation, it was found that the embezzlement was carried out using the passwords of bank officials,” Public prosecutor Rajesh Sable was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Impact on Naman Ojha’s Legacy

The scandal involving Vinay Ojha has undoubtedly cast a shadow on Naman Ojha’s personal life. Naman remains a respected figure in Indian cricket.

The wicketkeeper-batsman from Madhya Pradesh played four international games for India. He debuted in ODIs alongside Ashwin in Harare against Sri Lanka in June 2010, opening under Suresh Raina‘s captaincy but was dismissed for 1. In two back-to-back T20I matches on India’s tour of Zimbabwe, also under Raina, he scored 2 and 10 as an opener. He made his Test debut under Virat Kohli in 2015 against Sri Lanka in Colombo, scoring 21 and 35, and effecting five dismissals.
