Team India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, highlighted Shubman Gill’s growing workload and the difficulty of maintaining consistency across all formats ahead of the home Test series against South Africa. Although Gill has mainly focused on the longer formats, he recently returned to the T20I side as vice-captain, signaling his expanding responsibilities.
The young batter was also handed the ODI captaincy for the Australia tour, replacing Rohit Sharma. However, Gill struggled to make an impact in the limited-overs series, with modest performances in the ODIs and only brief moments of form in the T20Is. His recent decline has sparked discussions among fans and experts about the need for better workload management.
Now, less than a week after wrapping up the Australian tour, Shubman Gill once again shoulders the responsibility of leading India in a vital home series that forms part of the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
“It’s super challenging to play all the formats. That’s why you see lesser and lesser players playing all formats. Shubman has taken up this challenge and is up for it. The boys are putting up so much work to be in a good shape for the challenge,” Ryan ten Doeschate said in the pre-match press conference (via RevSportz).
“We’ve Learned from NZ Series” – Ryan ten Doeschate Says India Won’t Repeat Past Mistakes
Ryan ten Doeschate expects South Africa to adopt a strategy similar to the New Zealand team that famously defeated India 3-0 last year. The Blackcaps dominated with their spin attack featuring Mitchell Santner, Ajaz Patel, and Glenn Phillips. Likewise, the Temba Bavuma-led South African side boasts a strong spin unit, including Keshav Maharaj, Senuran Muthusamy, and Simon Harmer.
“South Africa will most probably play three spinners, two seamers. That is a challenge when you play in the subcontinent. It’s going to be a good challenge. We have learned from the New Zealand series,”
