Fire starts in Eden Gardens’ dressing room during pre-World Cup 2023 renovations

A fire began in the false ceiling of the dressing room at Eden Gardens, where cricketers’ gear was stored. Their belongings were burnt, possibly due to a short circuit, sparking concerns about the stadium’s infrastructure before the upcoming World Cup.

The origin of the unexpected fire is under investigation. As the World Cup approaches, renovation efforts are in full swing, aiming to finish the iconic venue’s transformation by September 15. While ICC officials were content with the project’s advancement and plan another review next month, the recent fire setback has introduced new challenges.

Eden Gardens’ renovation prioritizes fire safety with required permits for matches. Fire concerns for the upcoming World Cup are being addressed, and a new cricket players’ dressing room is being built.

Once the fire was spotted, the staff alerted the fire department. Two fire engines arrived and controlled the situation within an hour. The abundance of electrical equipment used in the renovations is considered a likely factor.

Temporary connections were set up for the work, as stated by sources from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). Currently, there is no CCTV connectivity in the stadiums. Before the World Cup, CAB must avoid further management mistakes. Debabrata Das, Joint Secretary, hurried to Eden Gardens after the fire incident. He mentioned investigating possible negligence.
