Rajasthan Royals (RR) are all set to welcome back former Indian cricketer Sairaj Bahutule as their spin bowling coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Having previously worked with the franchise between 2018 and 2021, Bahutule returns after a stint at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. With his vast experience and deep knowledge of spin bowling, his presence in the dugout is expected to strengthen RR’s bowling department significantly.
Bahutule’s Coaching Journey
Bahutule, a former India spinner, has played two Test matches and five ODIs for India. His coaching journey took him to various roles, including his recent tenure at the NCA, now rebranded as the Centre of Excellence. He was also part of the Indian team’s coaching staff under Rahul Dravid during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and in Sri Lanka.
Why Rajasthan Royals Chose Bahutule Again?
Rajasthan Royals have always been known for their strategic planning, and bringing back Bahutule is a well-thought-out decision. His past tenure with the team was marked by the significant development of young spinners. Given his expertise, he will play a crucial role in guiding RR’s spin department.
Bahutule will work closely with RR’s head coach Rahul Dravid and bowling coach Shane Bond. This trio brings a mix of experience in both pace and spin bowling, providing RR with a balanced coaching approach.
Impact on Rajasthan Royals’ Spin Attack
The Royals have a strong spin arsenal featuring Maheesh Teekshana, Kumar Kartikeya, and Wanindu Hasaranga. With Bahutule’s mentorship, these bowlers are expected to sharpen their skills and adapt to different match situations.
Apart from spinners, RR also boasts a formidable pace attack with bowlers like Jofra Archer, Tushar Deshpande, and Akash Madhwal. Bahutule’s strategic input will be vital in complementing their attack with an efficient spin unit.
Bahutule’s Vision for Rajasthan Royals
His main focus will be to nurture young talent, fine-tune their skills, and develop match-winning strategies. With his deep understanding of IPL dynamics, he aims to make RR’s bowling department one of the best in the league.
Bahutule said to Cricbuzz, “The discussions are ongoing, and I’m close to finalizing my involvement with the franchise. There are still a few details to be worked out, but I’m excited to be realigning with the Royals. I’m also thrilled to be reuniting with Rahul. He was the one who introduced me to the Indian team during the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in 2023 when I served as the spin-bowling coach. I was also part of his coaching staff in Sri Lanka, so I’m looking forward to our reunion.”
RR’s Performance in Recent IPL Seasons
RR has had fluctuating performances in the past few IPL seasons. Strengthening their bowling department has been a priority, and Bahutule’s reappointment is a step toward achieving better results. Manoj Badale, the lead owner of RR, is reportedly interested in acquiring a team in The Hundred, England’s 100-ball tournament. If successful, this move will further expand RR’s global presence.
