Senanayake voluntarily turned himself in to the Sports Ministry’s Special Investigation Unit, a pivotal move in the ongoing legal proceedings. Significantly, Senanayake stands accused of trying to manipulate matches during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL).

It is alleged that he communicated with two fellow cricketers in Dubai by phone to conspire in match-fixing activities. These claims have tarnished his previously esteemed cricketing career.

It was prompted by the Attorney General’s directive to the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry to commence criminal proceedings against him. Senanayake refuted all accusations, asserting that they lacked truth and had no foundation.

In 2021, Senanayake’s request for anticipatory bail, aimed at preventing his arrest, was rejected by the Colombo Magistrate. From 2012 to 2016, the 38-year-old participated in only one Test match, 49 ODIs, and 24 T20 internationals.
