With the highly anticipated Test series against Australia approaching, all eyes are on India’s squad and the uncertainty surrounding captain Rohit Sharma’s availability. Former cricketer and current selector Gautam Gambhir recently expressed his hope that Rohit will be available for the first Test in Perth but acknowledged the importance of backup options.
Rohit Sharma’s Uncertain Availability
Rohit Sharma’s availability for the first Test against Australia remains in question, primarily due to personal reasons. This uncertainty has sparked discussions about who might fill his critical role as an opener if he isn’t available. Although his absence would be a blow, Gambhir’s comments indicate a measured approach, focusing on India’s depth in talent and readiness to adapt.
If Rohit is unavailable, Jasprit Bumrah, the designated vice-captain, would step up to lead the team. Known for his disciplined approach and game-changing capabilities, Bumrah’s captaincy could bring a new dynamic to the team.
“Jasprit Bumrah, being the designated vice-captain, obviously will, if Rohit is not available. Now, there is no confirmation, but we will let you know exactly what the situation will be. Hopefully he’s going to be available, but everything we’re going to get to know at the start of the series,” Gambhir said at a press-conference in Mumbai before the squad’s flight to Australia.
Potential Replacement Options for Rohit
Despite the uncertainty, Gambhir exudes confidence in the squad’s depth. His comments suggest that he sees a resilient team capable of adapting to changes and challenges, especially in the opening position, which is critical for a strong start in Test matches.
If Rohit is indeed absent, several players could potentially open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. These include Abhimanyu Easwaran, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill. Each of these players brings a unique set of skills and experience, offering Gambhir valuable options.
Gambhir said, “Obviously there is Easwaran and there is Rahul there. So, we will take a call closer to the first Test match if Rohit is not available. There are options there, it’s not that there are no options there. There are quite a few options in the squad. Once it gets closer to the first Test match, we’ll plan and play the best playing XI that’s going to do the job for us.”
KL Rahul’s Versatile Role
KL Rahul’s versatility is a significant asset. Having played as an opener, middle-order batsman, and even as a wicketkeeper, Rahul’s adaptability could be advantageous for India. Despite recent low scores, his experience and technique make him a viable option if Rohit is unavailable.
“There are times when you go with the experienced players as well. And that is the quality of the man. That he can bat at the top of the order, he can bat at No. 3 and he can actually bat at No. 6 as well,” Gambhir said of Rahul. “You need quite a lot of talent to be doing these kinds of jobs as well. And he’s kept wickets in the one-day format as well.
“Imagine how many countries have players like KL who can open the batting and can bat at No. 6 as well? So, I feel, if need be, he can do the job for us, especially if Rohit is not available for the first Test match.”
Team Combination Considerations for Gambhir
Gambhir emphasized that the final team composition would depend on multiple factors, including the pitch conditions and opposition strategies. He mentioned that the squad has ample flexibility, allowing them to select the best combination for the specific demands of the Perth Test.
“We will try and get the best combination possible who can do the job for us in Perth. And be it Shubman opening the batting or Easwaran or KL, it all depends on what we feel is the right combination,” Gambhir said.
The first Test is scheduled to begin on November 22, giving the Indian team time to adjust to the conditions. A group of players, including Siraj, Deep, Gill, Sundar, and Jaiswal, have already left for Australia to begin acclimating, with the rest of the squad joining shortly.
