It’s a massive day today as the popular Royal Challengers Bangalore will play their opening match of IPL 2020. Ahead of their opening clash Gautam Gambhir has picked a surprising name who he thinks should open for RCB.

It is expected that either Parthiv Patel or young Devdutt Padikkal will open the inning with Aaron Finch. However, Gambhir reckons that the franchise should consider opening with all-rounder Washington Sundar.

Gambhir stated that he is looking forward to how captain Kohli uses Sundar in IPL 2020. Usually, Sundar bowls his off-spin during the batting powerplay and bats in the lower order. The former Indian cricketer believes that Sundar should be given the license to express himself at the top order this season.

“I am actually very excited to see how Virat Kohli uses Washington Sundar because he bowls well with the new ball. And then he can tonk a few as well but then it depends on what number does he bat at,” Gautam Gambhir told Cricket.com

“They could actually pick a punt with him and open with him and then let him just go free. He has that capability to give you those useful runs and obviously he can bowl four overs at any stage of the game as well,” Gambhir added.

Meanwhile, as of now, the RCB think tank has suggested that they will go with the opening combination of Finch and Padikkal in the initial matches. Also, Sundar has never opened in his IPL career and it will be a massive gamble for him to bat in the top order.

Furthermore, in his three-year IPL career so far, Sundar has managed to score only 75 runs in 21 games. It will be interesting to see at which slot he bats in the opening game against Sunrisers at Sharjah.
