Global Super League T20 To Launch In Guyana From November 26

Cricket fans worldwide have a new event to look forward to as a thrilling cricket tournament is set to take place in Guyana from November 26 to December 7, 2024. This highly anticipated event will feature five teams from five different countries, all competing for a prize fund of US$1 million.

Tournament structure

The tournament, officially known as the Global Super League. The event will include a total of 11 matches, with each team playing four matches in the league stage. The top two teams from the group stage will then progress to the grand final, where the coveted trophy and prize money will be up for grabs.

All matches are set to take place at the iconic Guyana National Stadium in Providence, a venue that has hosted numerous international matches over the years.

While the full list of participating teams is yet to be finalized, one team that is confirmed to take part is Guyana’s own Guyana Amazon Warriors. This team has been a major force in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and will look to showcase their skills on an even larger stage. The remaining teams will include top T20 franchises from other countries, making this a truly global event with a high level of competition.

South America’s first standalone cricket event

The Global Super League is a historic milestone for South American cricket. Although cricket has deep roots in the Caribbean, this event will be the first standalone tournament of its kind on the continent.

His Excellency Mohammed Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana, has voiced his strong support for the tournament, emphasizing the potential it holds for the country.

In a statement, he said, “The Global Super League has the full support of the Government of Guyana as we build a world-class sports tourism product. Cricket is part of our cultural history, it is that unifying force, part of our heritage, and an integral part of our strategic objective in economic diversification with a strong emphasis on Tourism.”

The Global Super League is not just about creating a new tournament; it’s about shaping the future of cricket in the region. As President Ali highlighted, this tournament will align with Guyana’s broader strategic goals in areas like economic diversification, tourism, and international collaboration.

A name synonymous with cricketing excellence, Sir Clive Lloyd has been appointed as the Chairman of the Global Super League.

The former West Indies captain and one of cricket’s all-time greats, Lloyd expressed his excitement about the event, saying, “The passion for cricket in Guyana rivals that of fans anywhere, and we look forward to celebrating our love of the game and our rich and vibrant country with both those visiting in person and watching from around the world.”

Guyana has a proud cricketing history, with a long tradition of producing world-class players like Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper. The Global Super League aims to build on this legacy and inspire a new generation of cricketers from the country.
