After the game, India’s captain Rohit Sharma spoke out about the contentious dismissal of the game’s first batter Shubman Gill on Day 4’s delivery from Scott Boland.
The World Test Championship final at The Oval on Sunday turned out to be a nightmare for Team India as they were defeated by Australia by a score of 209 runs.
Team India needed 280 runs to win the match with seven wickets in hand after chasing a mammoth total of 444.
However, Australia’s bowling attack completely dominated the Rohit Sharma-led team, forcing them to be dismissed for 234.
Shubman Gill’s disputed dismissal has led Rohit Sharma to criticize WTC organizers
India’s captain Rohit Sharma spoke about the contentious dismissal of Shubman Gill on Day 4’s delivery from Scott Boland after the game ended.
Cameron Green dove to his left in his preferred gully position to complete the catch after pacer Boland found the edge of the Indian opener’s bat.
Gill was ruled out by TV umpire Richard Kettleborough, who was the third umpire to make the call.
Rohit commented on the dismissal and said that Kettleborough came to the decision too quickly and should have watched more replays.
He continued by saying that there were more camera angles in the Indian Premier League than in the World Tennis Championship final.
“I just felt disappointed that I wasn’t enough. The third umpire ought to have seen a few more replays and details about how the catch was held, for example.”
“He must have seen it three or four times before he was persuaded. It doesn’t matter if it was distributed or not; you need to have accurate information about everything.”
“Just as the catch isn’t the only possible topic, so can be anything else. The decision was made very quickly, and I was a little disappointed with that”, Rohit Sharma said in the post-game press conference.
“You need to be absolutely certain when a catch like that is made because it’s a final and we were also at that crucial point in the game.”
Therefore, that left me feeling a little let down. Additionally, more camera angles ought to have been displayed. Only one or two camera angles were displayed.
In the IPL, we have more angles. In the IPL, there are ten different approaches.
“Why there wasn’t any ultra motion or zoomed image during such a major world event is beyond me. I was a little let down by that,” Rohit continued.
Australia won their first World Test Championship title with a crushing 209-run victory on the fifth day of the summit match, continuing India’s poor performance at ICC events.
India had previously lost to New Zealand in the inaugural WTC final in 2021, marking their second consecutive defeat in the competition.
