“Had To Be Ashwin”-Twitter Reacts As Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes First Batter To Be Dismissed Retired Out In IPL

Ashwin retired out

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are currently facing each other in Match 20 of IPL 2022. LSG skipper KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Rajasthan Royals were struggling at 67-4 after 9.5 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin came in to bat at no.4 for RR, ahead of Riyan Parag. He provided the much-needed stability and scored 28 runs off 23 deliveries. He added 68 runs along with Shimron Hetmyer.

On the second ball of the 19th over, Ashwin retired himself out so that big hitter Riyan Parag can finish the innings for Rajasthan Royals. Ashwin became the first player in IPL to get ‘retired-out’. He received a lot of praise from the cricket fraternity for this tactical move.

Retired out is a strategy in modern-day cricket, which might be used more often in the future. Once retired out, a batter cannot come back to the crease.

Shimron Hetmyer talked about Ravichandran Ashwin’s move in the innings break and said: “I had no idea about it (Ashwin’s retirement) – he was also a bit tired. It was a good decision, as the kid (Parag) hit a six for us.”

Riyan Parag scored 8 runs off 4 balls. Shimron Hetmyer scored unbeaten 59 runs off just 36 deliveries. He hit 1 four and 6 maximums in his knock. Rajasthan Royals eventually finished with 165 runs on the board.

Here is how Twitter reacted to Ravichandran Ashwin getting ‘retired-out’:

Shahid Afridi (Pakistan), S Tobgay (Bhutan) and Sunzamul Islam (Cumilla Warriors) are the only other players to be dismissed in this mode in T20 cricket.
