Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are currently facing each other in Match 20 of IPL 2022. LSG skipper KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Rajasthan Royals were struggling at 67-4 after 9.5 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin came in to bat at no.4 for RR, ahead of Riyan Parag. He provided the much-needed stability and scored 28 runs off 23 deliveries. He added 68 runs along with Shimron Hetmyer.
On the second ball of the 19th over, Ashwin retired himself out so that big hitter Riyan Parag can finish the innings for Rajasthan Royals. Ashwin became the first player in IPL to get ‘retired-out’. He received a lot of praise from the cricket fraternity for this tactical move.
Retired out is a strategy in modern-day cricket, which might be used more often in the future. Once retired out, a batter cannot come back to the crease.
Shimron Hetmyer talked about Ravichandran Ashwin’s move in the innings break and said: “I had no idea about it (Ashwin’s retirement) – he was also a bit tired. It was a good decision, as the kid (Parag) hit a six for us.”
Riyan Parag scored 8 runs off 4 balls. Shimron Hetmyer scored unbeaten 59 runs off just 36 deliveries. He hit 1 four and 6 maximums in his knock. Rajasthan Royals eventually finished with 165 runs on the board.
Here is how Twitter reacted to Ravichandran Ashwin getting ‘retired-out’:
Perfect that Ashwin is the first one to be retired out. Bet he's among the rare players who would actually understand the thinking behind it#IPL2022 #RRvLSG

Retired OUT….it was only a matter of time we saw it in the #IPL2022 Makes a lot of sense.

Retire-Out. First of many. De-stigmatise it.

A lot of Scorers don't seem to understand / interpret the cricket laws relating to 'Retirement' correctly. A batter is only 'Retired' at the instance of retiring. It becomes Retired Out or Retired Not Out only at the end of the innings, as the case may be. #IPL2022 #LSGvRR pic.twitter.com/Vm2yC3C64z

I am not one bit surprised that the first person to Retire Out in the IPL is Ashwin. Hope it becomes the norm. #IPL #LSGvsRR

Seismic moment in T20 history: R Ashwin becomes the first batter retired out in the IPL
Had come in at No. 6 to add stability after a collapse. Runs off to give Rajasthan's finisher Riyan Parag 10 balls at the death

Ashwin retired out is fascinating T20 tactics. T20 is causing us to rethink the way we conceive the game of in the 21st century.😊😊

This move has been discussed so often over the last five years but it takes a brave team and a selfless player to translate theory into practice
Parag only made 8 off 4 balls – but that should be enough to vindicate the decision, with Ashwin striking at 122 in his innings

Ashwin is a groundbreaking hero of cricketer, love him for that

Props to Ravichandran Ashwin for retiring out himself in team's interest. It is something which should be normalized in limited overs cricket. I'm sure it will be done regularly in the future. Ashwin can be called the pioneer of this brave strategy. RESPECT! #IPL2022

Had to be Ashwin. A first retired out in the IPL. If it’s in the rule book, why not. Tactical game awareness > Set notional patterns. Well done, sir. #RRvLSG

Ashwin retiring out is a good move for the tactical side of things in the IPL. But otherwise it makes very little sense to do that in the 19th over when has batted 23 balls. Should have happened at least an over earlier.

First ever in #IPL history. Retired out, who else but #Ashwin

Retired out? Sorry what? How does Ashwin find these cricket rules? 😂

Ashwin has been retried out! Talk about playing for the team and leading from the front, well done, @ashwinravi99 & @rajasthanroyals!

As @ashwinravi99 becomes the first player to retire out in the IPL, I can’t help but think about the time he’s done with his playing days and is heading the ICC men’s Cricket Committee. Imagine the innovations he’ll bring into and for the game #IPL2022

Shahid Afridi (Pakistan), S Tobgay (Bhutan) and Sunzamul Islam (Cumilla Warriors) are the only other players to be dismissed in this mode in T20 cricket.
