Hardik Pandya Clarifies Tilak Varma’s ‘Retire Out’ Incident

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has finally addressed the controversial decision to ‘retire out’ Tilak Varma during their IPL 2025 match against Lucknow Super Giants. The move, which sparked a wave of criticism from fans and cricket pundits, failed to change the outcome of the match, with MI falling short of victory.

After another defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Hardik broke his silence and explained the reasoning behind the decision. He revealed that Tilak had suffered a painful blow to his finger a day before the LSG game, which significantly influenced the call. Although it was labeled a tactical move, Hardik clarified that the injury played a critical role in choosing to send in a fresh batter instead.

Team Adjustments and Batting Order Shuffle

Hardik also shed light on several changes in the team’s batting order. He explained that Naman Dhir, typically positioned lower down the order, was pushed up during the previous match due to Rohit Sharma’s unavailability. However, once Rohit returned, the team reverted to its original structure.

The MI captain emphasized that players like Naman possess the versatility to bat both early and during the death overs, which gives the team flexibility. Still, he admitted that the loss against RCB highlighted lapses in execution, particularly during the crucial death overs where Mumbai couldn’t maintain their momentum.

Tough Conditions and Execution Failures

Reflecting on the overall performance, Hardik described the match as a “run-fest” with a pitch heavily favoring batters. He expressed empathy for the bowlers, noting the lack of room to operate on such a flat surface. Despite their best efforts, Mumbai Indians failed to contain the opposition, and small moments—especially during the powerplay and death overs—ended up costing them the game.

He praised Tilak Varma for performing well despite the prior injury and acknowledged that failing to capitalize on a few key overs significantly hampered their chase. As Mumbai Indians now face a challenging start to their IPL 2025 campaign with four losses in five games, Hardik’s comments aimed to clear the air and bring focus back to team execution.
