Hardik Pandya To Play Vijay Hazare Matches Ahead of New Zealand White-Ball Series: Reports

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has taken a carefully planned call regarding his participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, keeping long-term fitness and international commitments in mind. Pandya will feature in two of Baroda’s remaining three league-stage matches, giving himself valuable competitive game time without overexerting his body.

He is set to play against Vidarbha on January 3 and Chandigarh on January 8, while opting out of the January 6 fixture against Jammu & Kashmir. This selective participation reflects a workload-management strategy shaped by recent injury concerns and a packed international calendar ahead.

Focus on Fitness and Injury Management

Pandya has only recently returned to full fitness after recovering from a quadriceps injury, an issue that sidelined him earlier in the season. Given his importance to India’s white-ball setup, the team management and selectors are keen to ensure he remains injury-free. By skipping one Vijay Hazare match, Pandya avoids the risk of physical overload while still staying match-ready.

His decision highlights the increasing emphasis on player longevity in modern cricket, where elite all-rounders are often rotated to prevent burnout. The move also allows the selectors to closely monitor his rhythm, bowling workload, and overall readiness before handing him international responsibilities again.

Road Ahead: New Zealand Series and Bigger Goals

Following his limited stint in domestic cricket, Pandya will be rested for India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on January 11. His last ODI appearance came earlier in the year, and the team management prefers not to rush him back into the 50-over format. Instead, the focus is firmly on the subsequent T20I series starting January 21, where Pandya is expected to play a key role.

With major ICC events on the horizon, including the T20 World Cup, India’s think tank wants its premier all-rounder operating at peak fitness. The selectors are expected to finalize the ODI squad soon, balancing form, fitness, and workload across formats, while Pandya’s carefully calibrated schedule underlines his central importance to India’s white-ball ambitions.
