Ravi Shastri, the ex-head coach of India, has praised Virat Kohli for his durability and flexibility in numerous formats. For a long time, Shastri and Kohli enjoyed a warm friendship because they worked together as coach and captain.
Shastri emphasized that he did not intend to create a comparison among players coming from different generation. However, mentioning about how good Kohli has been for ten years now across all formats has led Shastri to believe no one else would have been able to maintain such longevity.
Here’s what Ravi Shastri said regarding Virat Kohli on the ICC Review:
“You cannot compare players of different eras. But if someone can stay on top of the sport for that long, this showed his versatility, his ability to adapt and just shows his skillsets to do that. Not many can do that. But he has shown why he is different.”
Kohli received the Player of the Match award in the T20 World Cup final for his 76 runs off 59 balls. After the match, he announced his retirement from the T20I format.

Ravi Shastri thinks that Virat Kohli’s name should rank among the best players ever. He said this while explaining why players like Joe Root, Steve Smith and Rohit Sharma have been outstanding in one format only but Kohli accomplished a great deal in different formats in a long time.
“I think one of the greats of the game. I think he dominated that decade across formats of the game. When you look at one player who dominated all three formats of the game for a period of ten years, it had to be Virat Kohli.”
”You would get Joe Root in one format, Steve Smith in one format, Rohit Sharma in one format. But this guy was in the top three across formats,” Shastri stated in the same interaction.
In all T20 World Cup competitions, Kohli has been the sole individual who has received a pair of Player of the Tournament awards. Furthermore, he obtained the Player of the Tournament award in the 2023 ODI World Cup as well.
